Alimak Hoists on Gateway Bridge II, Brisbane, QLD, Australia

Leighton’s Abigroup Joint Venture (LAJV) was awarded the AUD$1.88billion contract by Queensland Motorways to design, construct and maintain the Gateway Bridge Upgrade project. With the official start of works in March 2007and the expected completion date is scheduled for June 2011.

Alimak Hek (Queensland) secured the contract as the sole Construction Hoist supplier to LAJV. Due to this unique partnership Alimak Hek Pty Ltd will have a total of 6 Alimak Construction Hoists installed at the projects peak period. The Main Piers (Piers 6&7) will have Qty 2 Alimak SCANDO 20/32 Constructions Hoists and the Approach Piers (Piers 1-5,8-14) will have Qty 4 Alimak SCANDO 10/20 Constructions Hoists. In total there will be 24 Hoist installations (this includes the 18 relocations required to ensure access is gained to both the jump form and pierhead platforms).

The Gateway Bridge Upgrade required a tailored engineering solution to suit the specific to the design of the bridge. For Alimak Hek this meant finding the most flexible tie for the installation. The tie(s) on this project were required to accommodate very large tie spacing’s, distance from the hoist cage to the landing level & an extremely wide anchor spread.
