Heavy freight & vehicle lifts

Manchester City Art Gallery, Manchester, UK.

When Manchester’s City Art Gallery underwent major redevelopment, one of the most important additions saw the introduction of the ‘Arts Lift’; an Alimak lift that provides transport for the paintings and exhibitions into the gallery itself.

The loading bay of the new building is the main access point for all art works and other large items necessary for the everyday operation and maintenance of an art gallery.

The twin-masted Rack & Pinion bottom drive lift measures 3.2m x 5.5m x 3.5m, and has a maximum carrying capacity of 6000 kg or 80 passengers. A fully loaded vehicle can also be driven into the loading bay and by using the hydraulic platform in front of the lift, the artwork can be offloaded from the vehicle, lowered to ground level, and then moved into the lift.

The drives for the lift are mounted beneath the platform to minimise the headroom requirements in the lift shaft.

The hydraulic platform was also provided by Alimak and sourced from the Swedish manufacturer HYMO. Special controls on the HYMO lift system enable units to be used as a lifting platform for the movement of disabled passengers to the top of an access stairway.

The lift has manually operated shutter type doors on both sides, to enable access to a combination of five landing levels, four on the loading bay side and one on the opposite side.
