Temporary Applications
London Borough of Newham, London

At the beginning of 2002, Alimak Hek Ltd were invited by the London Borough of Newham to design a unique, but adaptable, external lift system to provide access for its tenants, whilst the buildings existing lift system was refurbished.
Although the council had reviewed a variety of alternative solutions, including a full evacuation of the building or the possibility of using conventional construction hoists, these solutions were deemed both too expensive and impractical.
Furthermore, aside from operating externally, Newham Council also required that any access solution was to be compliant with current lift and disabled access regulations.
During the design process, several important factors had to be taken into consideration and numerous obstacles relating to fire and health & safety regulations, existing ground service, and the building design itself had to be overcome.
Alimak Hek Ltd worked in conjunction with Newham Council, Sematic UK and the ALIMAK manufacturing plant in Sweden, to ensure that the lift package was designed efficiently, and met the various requirements needed for such a unique project.
In order to reduce the installation time and limit any unnecessary disruption to the residents, the lift car, doors and drive units were all assembled as one unit. The landing doors were also assembled in individual portal frames to ensure a quick and efficient installation process.
Alimak Hek Ltd's extensive knowledge and preparation has resulted in a modular passenger lift range that can be attached to the exterior of a building and withstand extreme weather conditions, whilst providing all the comforts you would expect from a modern internal lift.
The success of the Alimak Hek temporary lift range has been impressive, and systems have already been used in several locations within the London Borough of Newham, as well as on other residential, hospital and shopping centre applications.
