New Build Construction
Mast Quay Complex, Woolwich, London

ALIMAK HEK mast climbing work platforms makes for rapid progress on River Thames complex.
Adjacent to the Woolwich Ferry terminal on the south bank of the River Thames, work is well advanced on the first phase of the Mast Quay complex. When completed, the complex will comprise one low-rise structure and two 16 storeys, 48m high tower blocks. It will provide 303 luxury apartments with river views, a concierge service, a health and fitness complex as well as 1850m² of office space.
Seven HEK C20 mast climbing work platforms are being used for accessing the building facades. The work platforms are on hire from Adastra Access Limited. Adastra is responsible for the erecting and dismantling the work platforms, as well as ensuring that the equipment is properly maintained and serviced.
Due to the building design, the work platforms are moved frequently from one position to another. With the large number of dismantling and re-erections of the platforms, it has still been proven to be the most cost effective means of accessing the various façades.
The HEK machines are being used in various configurations with some platform lengths up to 26 m. The units are erected on the ground with the exception of one area where the tower façade is set back from a lower roof. The roof structure, however, has sufficient loading capacity to carry the weight of the platforms. The mast climbing work platforms are anchored into the concrete slab at 8m intervals and are used to install wallboards, windows elements and external cladding. The work platforms are also used to attach structural fixings onto which will be bolted prefabricated balconies.
The architects had to consider the ecological factors during the conversion of the old dock site. The structures will feature green roofs that will help to create a natural habitat for protected birds that nest in the area.
The platforms were first erected in January 2005 and will be on-site until August 2005. The first phase of the development includes one tower block and is due for completion in 2006.
